Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to identify the types of knowledge alienation across generations, to examine the principal causes of intergenerational knowledge alienation, to identify its manifestations and indicators, to explore the resulting effects, and finally to propose approaches for mitigation and for narrowing the gap between generations. The study adopted a descriptive survey methodology, utilizing a questionnaire administered to a random sample of 390 members of Saudi society in the city of Riyadh. The findings indicated a high level of agreement among respondents regarding the types of intergenerational knowledge alienation (85.63%). The results also revealed substantial agreement on the causes of knowledge alienation (84.64%), as well as on its manifestations and indicators (79.47%). Agreement concerning the consequences of knowledge alienation reached 78.28%. Notably, the highest level of agreement (88.06%) was recorded with respect to proposed mechanisms for treatment and for fostering rapprochement between generations. The study recommends the design of information literacy programs targeting the older generation to enhance their skills in engaging with modern technologies, alongside guiding the younger generation toward systematic and critical use of digital information sources. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need to transform libraries and information centers into active platforms for intergenerational knowledge dialogue by organizing knowledge-based discussion forums, workshops, and intergenerational reading programs, in addition to developing interactive digital services that ensure accessibility and usability for all generations.
