The relative contribution of emotional regulation strategies in predicting positive life orientation among female students at Umm Al-Qura University

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the most common emotional regulation strategies among undergraduate female students at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah and aimed to assess the relative contribution of emotional regulation strategies in predicting positive life orientation among the students. The research sample consisted of 442 female students from Umm Al-Qura University. A descriptive analytical approach (correlational، predictive، and comparative) was employed. The researcher developed a questionnaire on emotional regulation strategies and a scale for measuring positive life orientation. The results revealed that the strategy of emotional regulation and management was the most commonly used، and the level of positive life orientation was high among the sample. The findings also indicated statistically significant differences in the strategies of emotional regulation and management، cognitive reappraisal، and social engagement، as well as in the overall score، favoring students in scientific disciplines. Furthermore، the results demonstrated that cognitive reappraisal، emotional regulation and management، and social engagement collectively contributed to predicting positive life orientation by 60.4%. The researcher recommended integrating emotional regulation strategies into university curricula، either through specialized courses or training programs tailored to each academic discipline.
