Grammatical Consistency and Its Meanings in Al-Buhturi’s Siniyah
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study opens the door to scientific research on the importance of addressing the criterion of grammatical consistency, which was classified by De Beaugrand, among the linguistic criteria that indicate the coherence of the text, and applying its mechanisms from the linguistic and semantic perspective to ancient Arabic poetry. It took Al-Buhturi’s Siniya as a cognitive model, to reveal the value of employing connection and reference in the parts of the poem in service of its connotations and meanings that agree with the poet’s vision and the appropriateness of its composition. The descriptive-analytical approach was adopted because it is the closest to resolving the scientific problem. Based on the analysis, it became clear how deeply the poet possesses knowledge in adapting language to serve the concepts of emotional poetry, which carries intellectual reflections, including textual coherence and the use of grammatical consistency standards, especially the reference that linked the language of the text to the contents of intellectual beauty, to show the value of sadness and lamentation; and the connection that showed coherence in terms of presenting life concepts and the wisdom that the poet included in his harsh experience, with treachery and changing conditions, and the rise of the scum of the nation to positions of power.
